Military Chief Warns Troops About Politics
By THOM SHANKER
WASHINGTON — The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has written an unusual open letter to all those in uniform, warning them to stay out of politics as the nation approaches a presidential election in which the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be a central, and certainly divisive, issue.
“The U.S. military must remain apolitical at all times and in all ways,” wrote the chairman, Adm. Mike Mullen, the nation’s highest-ranking officer. “It is and must always be a neutral instrument of the state, no matter which party holds sway.”

NYT’s Rosenthal calls White House attack ‘puzzling’
New York Times editorial page editor Andy Rosenthal said it was “puzzling” why the White House attacked the paper’s editorial on a new GI Bill.
“We said Bush opposes the Webb bill,” Rosenthal said by phone. “He opposes the Webb bill.”
“I don’t understand what’s misleading about it,” he added.
Rosenthal, who once covered the White House for the Times, said that such push-back is not uncommon.
“The White House’s idea of a fair and balanced story is they’re right and going to win,” Rosenthal said.
