ROME (AFP) - Pope Benedict XVI refused to meet US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in August, saying he was on holiday, an Italian newspaper reported Wednesday.

Rice “made it known to the Vatican that she absolutely had to meet the pope” to boost her diplomatic “credit” ahead of a trip to the Middle East, the Corriere della Sera daily reported without citing its sources.

A question about Canon Law…

Sexual abuse not just a Catholic problem: Vatican

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Sexual abuse of children is not just a Catholic Church problem and other institutions should take steps to acknowledge and deal with such “wickedness” within their own ranks, the Vatican said on Tuesday.

The Vatican’s chief spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi, also said the record $660 million settlement between the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and victims of sexual abuse was an attempt to “close a painful chapter and look forward.”

This is beginning to sound like the weigh-in for a Heavyweight Title fight with Fox-News vs. Aljazeera providing the coverage.

A pal in Chicago stated Pope Benedict did not seem to be a person who would say something without fore-thought. Still, I would have expected the Pontiff to pull a Billy Bats from GOODFELLAS when after a brief calm settled over a very tense confrontation with Joe Pesci’s ‘Tommy,’ Billy Bats had to turn the volume to 11 by growling, “Now go get your $%#@!&’ shine box!”

Virginia lawmaker: Children with disabilities are God’s punishment to women who previously had abortions.

Bob Marshall On Thursday, Virginia State Delegate Bob Marshall (R) spoke at a press conference against state funding for Planned Parenthood. He blasted the organization for supporting a women’s right to choose, saying that God punishes women who have had abortions by giving them disabled children:

“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children,” said Marshall, a Republican.

“In the Old Testament, the first born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There’s a special punishment Christians would suggest.”
