I have had the honor of serving on the Senate Judiciary Committee for 43 years, during which I’ve participated in confirmation hearings for all the justices who now sit on the Supreme Court. Over that time, my colleagues and I have asked probing questions […]

Is the concept of ‘rule of law’ too difficult for W’s grasp? Obviously, we want to be safe and we want to bring terrorists to justice, but if the process erodes our system’s hallowed beliefs, are we winners?

A Supreme Court Setback for Whistle-Blowers
By LINDA GREENHOUSE
WASHINGTON, May 30 — The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that the Constitution does not protect public employees against retaliation by their supervisors for anything they say in the course of performing their assigned duties.
While the court’s focus in the 5-to-4 decision […]

One has to tip the old Jimmy Hatlo Hat to Tom Delay. Despite the situation, he is still able to take sanctimoniousness to yet a higher level. Fear of tempting Fortuna would constrain less foolhardy people. Not Tom. He even wants his gun permit returned. Maybe best defense is a good offense, but sometimes the best defense is keeping one’s mouth shut. I’m certain he is attempting to galvanize his base by mixing Jesus n’ Ammo, but I have a sneaking suspicion his constituents are smarter than he may believe. Is it possible that Tom “doesn’t get” it?
