By JAMES GLANZ and DAVID ROHDE
Five years after the fall of the Taliban, a joint report by the Pentagon and the State Department has found that the American-trained police force in Afghanistan is largely […]

Don’t let Ashcroft see it!

Mr. Prager’s fears about using the Koran instead of the Bible certainly awakens a twisted kinship with the Taliban who could not abide having the almost two millennium-old, large statues of the Buddha within Afghanistan’s border. What in heaven’s name would Mr. Prager think if the U.S. Department of the Interior wanted to retrofit […]

Apparently Richard Denning, Hugh Marlowe and every other 1950s’ science fiction film doctor were unable to find the source of Dick’s dark personality.

DAVE: THIS SUMS IT ALL UP WITH DEPRESSING ACCURACY
‘Michael Hirsch writes in his Newsweek.com column: “Was there any more mind-boggling bit of historic bad luck than what happened after Election Day 2000, when those 537 votes in Florida wobbled, then stayed in George W. Bush’s column? Never mind what kind of president Al Gore would […]

Had W kept enough troops there, we could have had a chance, but Iraqnophobia & Cheney triumphed.

The Associated Press is reporting that “NATO’s top commander in Afghanistan warned on Sunday that a majority of Afghans would likely switch their allegiance to resurgent Taliban militants if their lives show no visible improvements in the next six months.”
This is a distressing statement for many reasons, but the fact that he is talking about […]

“Major Metzger vanished in civilian clothes while on an off-duty shopping trip with co-workers at a department store in central Bishkek.”–New York Times

This is the most disturbing line from the Times story about the 3-day-abduction of an Air Force Major for whom the military is conducting an investigation. I had felt a twinge of jingoism–not […]

Afghanistan orders journalists to report more good news
By James Rupert
Newsday

KABUL, Afghanistan — The war against the Taliban has gone badly these last months, but Afghanistan’s national intelligence agency has devised a secret plan to reverse the tide of bad news.”

I just saw a a Lou Dobbs’ program news story which stated that head injuries make up 65% of the total in Iraq and Afghanistan. A doctor whose son is in the war zone stated that the Marines said they could not afford the better, more protective helmet lining which is available. Yet, the pentagon will ask for big bucks this year for a pre-emptive strike missile which all of us know will lead to American men and women in yet another theatre of war–with cheap helmets.

Pentagon Seeks Nonnuclear Tip for Sub Missiles
By MICHAEL R. GORDON
WASHINGTON, May 28 — The Pentagon is pressing Congress to approve the development of a new weapon that would enable the United States to carry out nonnuclear missile strikes against distant targets within an hour.
The proposal has set off a complex debate about […]

Could this be another proof that we have yet to win the hearts and minds with W’s vision of freedom and liberty? Apologies may be necessary for repetition, but why in heaven’s name did this administration think everything would be a cakewalk? W, like many of us, has never been in combat, but my fear is that he never read about it. Thoughtful political and military leaders buffered us from the Cold War’s constant threat of nuclear annihilation. Let us hope that such men and women exist today.
