For Washington Women, Dinner With a Taste Of Real Power

The article refers to a “Mission Accomplished” moment. Where does W’s “major combat operations have ended” rank with other such statements? Dick’s observation that the Iraq insurgency was in its “last throes” carried a refreshing finality. “Not even God can sink this ship!” certainly drew a ’screw Fortuna’ cloud over H.M.S. Titanic’s maiden voyage. The “Dewey Defeats Truman” November 3, 1948 Chicago Tribune banner headline received more than a modicum of publicity. Adolph Hitler’s ‘Thousand Year Reich’ was catchy, but missed by almost ten centuries. Of minor global import, but still worthy of mention, was San Francisco Giants manager Dusty Baker’s premature adulation in awarding his pitcher the game ball before Game 6 of the 2002 World Series was complete. Baseball superstition exacted its punishment by allowing the Anaheim Angels to come from behind to win the game, then; the Series. Parallel to this is the yearly predictions by assorted baseball writers who proclaim this or that rookie ‘a future Hall of Famers.’ How many wars were to be over by Christmas? When is the latest date for U. S. citizens to be free of foreign dependence on oil? What about the eternal life of diamond needles? On a very personal level, I do recall walking through a Newport Beach, California Broadway department store while a video of “Physical” played on 125 television screens. I turned to my wife and said with a stentorian certainty, “This exercise culture won’t last.” That was 1983. So far, it’s last longer than any diamond needle which ever touched vinyl.

The Vatican states gay marriage threatens the traditional family as never before. Does that include the traditional family of Mommy, Daddy, baby Christine, little Timmy and his special ‘uncle’–Father ‘Let’s Do It In the Rectory?’ I imagine those memories would prevent a body from having an easy time with tradition. As for the House majority leader’s belief, Mr. Boehner is a perfect spokesman. His many, lobbyist-greased junkets reflect the grand tradition of unrestrained power. Passing out cigarette money on the floor was simply this latterday John the Baptist’s cry in the wilderness to return families to the tradition of having Dad cough his lungs into oblivion while Mom and the youngsters took up nicotine to soothe their grief. Finally, what better person than Katherine Harris to stand with tradition–that same tradition which prevented African-Americans from voting in Florida during Harris’ career-defining moment in 2000. She must have spent a lot of time searching for the demure jacket worn for the ceremony. She may be the only female house member who dry cleans her clothes with Botox for that second skin comfort.
