It seems as if the fiscally conservative Republicans would rather not look into over-spending unless it involves a welfare mother with five children or a middle class families with college loan or Medicare.

“Senators Debating Iraq Measure
By KATE ZERNIKE and CARL HULSE

WASHINGTON, June 20 — Republicans defeated a Democratic measure calling for an investigation into waste and fraud in military contracts today as the Senate engaged in an emotional debate over the Iraq war.”

I have placed these two stories on the same post because there is an exquisite justaposition of duty, honor and country balanced by avarice, gluttony and lies. Please keep these two stories in mind when W and Rover Boy start talking about “spaying the horse.” The American fighting men and women certainly deserve more than this socially-challenged admisnistration is giving them. The Civil War profiteers had nothing on these stooges.

A Shameful Silence On Coulter’s Spewing

By Joe Conason
New York Observer

With the predictable regularity of a locust plague, Ann Coulter and her enablers at the once-reputable firm of Random House have issued yet another volume of fascistic entertainment. Now the hard-drinking, trash-talking, fortysomething bachelorette bills herself as a Christian moralist, in holy battle against the liberal […]

Was it Paul Begala who commented on the mendacity of the present regime? He said something like “These guys would rather climb a tree and lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth.” That statement probably refers to someone’s asking them the time of day. Important questions undoubtedly involve more radical behaviors. Could this be the most immoral top-to-bottom administration in the history of the Republic? Know well that I am not referring to bad language, sexual peccadilloes, drinking and gambling. Those are universals in the human condition. I refer to the immorality of using dishonesty to send young men and women to their deaths, the immorality of allowing entire segments of our population to suffer in order to cater to the wealthy, the immorality of running a highest-bidder government which has little to do with the people, the immorality of allowing the poor suffer terribly in a half-assed rescue and recovery operation on the Gulf Coast and the immorality of hypocrisy which wraps this putrid mass in the flag and clerical robes!

The cave-in of the American people during the 2000 election fiasco in Florida was the first hint that we were in trouble as a nation of laws. ‘Bread and Circuses’ is a time-honored concept to keep the citizens from thinking. Instead of bread, we have SUVs while television–with its bottomless pit of celebrity veneration–provides the circus. Meanwhile, corporations and government work in tandem to insure the dissolution of our rights. This is not the millennia-long process of water eroding stone. In a relative terms it has the alacrity of a sleight-of-hand artist pulling a table cloth from beneath exquisite place settings. In our case, the sleight-of-hand artist need not be good, since breakage is accepted as part of the act. Lest anyone believe these acts against the Constitution are only temporary, read history to discover the obvious errors in logic.

Several weeks ago, a friend from Chicago and I were discussing the burgeoning problems with Iran. My friend posed this scenario. “Would it not be funny if all of the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s speeches were dubbed by the famous voice used as the head of the evil Praetorian Guard in the Steve Reeves, Italian-made, gladiator movies of the early 1960s. Certainly, the voice was perfect in its gruffness and upswing at the end of each sentence: WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW!?, THE EMPEROR WILL BE PLEASED, I SHALL ENJOY WATCHING YOU DIE IN THE JAWS OF THE BEASTS. With this in mind, my friend pondered the possibility that the Iranian president was actually talking about establishing a liason to faciliate Hollywood film production in Qum or worrying aloud about the chances of Tehran’s team in the World Cup–not a nuclear program. The so-called Christian-Jewish ID tag story was false and the concept of dirty tricks on an international plane is not above this administration.
