THREE YEARS AGO TODAY, Iraqis were “shocked and awed” by the power of the U.S. military. Today, Americans are shocked and awed by its limits. If the “cakewalks” of the 1980s and 1990s — Grenada, the Gulf War, Kosovo — restored America’s belief in its omnipotence, so […]

When this horrible story first hit the headlines, I did not comment because such a ridiculous finding as “sickle cell complications” had to have been a mis-print. I certainly hope Democrats go to the polls in November and clean up what is becoming a monument to national embarrassment. Did the President fly back from his ranch to defend the rights of the aggrieved family? Did the president’s brother react in outrage to this travesty against the Culture of Life? I wonder if any of those men involved in the beating claim to have been born again. Could it be that the spirit of the bad old days remains? Certainly, the voting fiascoes of Florida don’t dispell the possibility.

How many times are defendants placed in this type of jeopardy with a judge who may not have noticed or may have chosen to look the other way. For those who think the Warren Court favored criminals, this is a practicum of sorts. Moussaoui is going nowhere after having plead guilty, so we are lucky. But, what about innocent people who face imprisonment and death because of over-zealous prosecutors? For example, let’s take Texas. Does one really think that all of the condemned sent to their deaths by Born-Again W were guilty and/or received ‘due process?’ Illinois discovered many innocent men on death row and stopped executions, but their governor did not have God sitting on his shoulder.
